These economic times are just plain no fun. These times make people sad. People lose their jobs which means they don’t have enough money to buy things or to pay for things. It really is sad. I want to safe guard myself. Preparation is the key. Prophets say it is good to save up 3 months worth of income. I think this is smart. The prophets also say that it is good to have food stored up. My dad gave me a bunch of wheat and will do this for any of his children who are within a decent driving radius of him as I don’t think he can help himself. I bought a flat of diced tomatoes from Costco. I also bought a big thing of honey because that is supposed to be good too. Dan has almost finished our supply of olives though. There is one large box of chicken breasts in our freezer as well. Good start, but I know I can do better. One yummy dish I thought I could make with our food storage items is the wheat dish that my people, the Ukrainians eat for their Christmas feast. It is good and may get us through hard times. I am not sure yet. And we may need to own a cow for the necessary cream. Or a goat.
Another way to prepare is to learn from the experiences of others, even fictional others. For instance, I recently read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. This is a great book about very poor people right before World War One. I am now confident that I could make many delicious meals for a small family using only a stale loaf of bread, an onion, and some spices. I am also confident that my feet will be well covered if push came to shove. I will never have to be the one hoping, wishing, and praying for new shoes. Nope, not me, because I own many pairs of shoes that are not even close to worn out. I reckon a pair a year would bring me at least 20 solid years with sturdy footwear, albeit somewhat inappropriate depending on the activity.
3 woot-woots!:
'My people'. Hahaha!
I've had this feeling lately too. Which is funny b/c food storage always seemed so intense to me. Honey actually will never go bad. Mike taught me that. The consistencey might change, but it won't go bad. So load up on it :)
Shoes. v. important for emergency preparedness.
Kutya. I think that's what the wheat dish is called. Good idea. I grind mine and make bread, sometimes cracked wheat cereal.
The emergency $$ is SUCH a good idea. I have a replaced transmission in my van that is testimony to that. Amen.
