Dan and I had lunch together this afternoon. Because I want to barf everytime I eat anything from Tim Hortons that is not a Boston Cream donut, we chose Subway. This meant a small drive instead of a walk across the street, worth it for my tummy but perhaps not for the environment, hmmm. Anyways... I kinda overdid Subway as an excited teenager. Although we had a KFC in the small small town of my youth, when Subway opened in 7th grade it seemed like the first fast food establishment. KFC was on the way out of town and only reachable by a teenager at lunchtime via car. Subway was a mere 12 minute walk. I ate a lot of it. My 13 year old heart almost broke when they stopped making the Donair Sub which featured its own tantalizing Donair Sauce that graced every one of my subs. I moved on, got over it, and found that Honey Mustard could work almost as well... almost.
If Subway ever changed its cookie recipes my 26 year old heart would break in half and then in half again and again and again. No fastfood establishment can come close to the divinity that is a Subway cookie.
Let us review, together, the fast food cookies I have sampled over the years.
A&W: Cookie circumference is too big, chocolate chunks are too big, and dough does not have enough flavor. I suggest downsizing and a little extra butter and vanilla. That is, if you are actually using butter and not margerine!
Quiznos: Cookie is too thick and circumference too big. It can be difficult for the customer to notice the difference between chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin (husband). Keep the thick cookie if you must, just make it smaller and the varieties more distinguishable . . . for the love of all that's holy!
Tim Hortons: Too freaking sweet, too much cheap chocolate, and overcooked. Take it easy on that sugar Timmy, spend time selecting ingredients, and remember that the trick to a good cookie is no longer than 8 mintues in the oven and letting the cookies set on the hot cookie sheet before removing.
Of course nothing comes close to a warm, gooey, homemade cookie, but in a crunch, Subway does the trick.
And oh- while we were at Subway I noticed that Dan is getting more grey hairs as each day passes. He loves it. It troubles me. And today is World Nutella Day (shout out to Nunu).
3 woot-woots!:
How did I miss Nutella Day?! :) Can't wait to see you in a few months--I'm signed up for Thursday conference, so we'll get lots of time together. Hooray!
I totally agree with your cookie analysis! I love subway cookies! I wish I had known about and celebrated Nutella day!!
Mmm...I celebrated with a jar of the good stuff and a baguette. So. Good.
